Kentucky Derby 2022: Why Bob Baffert won’t have any horses in 148th Run for the Roses

After a 2-5 season a year ago, Michigan State coach Mel Tucker gambled big on the transfer portal. The Spartans were suddenly 11-2, Peach Bowl champions, and a model for any program hoping for a quick turnaround.

36 FBS institutions added 10 or more transfers to their rosters after a turbulent summer. In five of the top eight of these classes, new coaches were attempting to put their own stamp on a program. However, because of the large number of high-quality FBS contributors, programs could change dramatically by the fall.

In 2022, five college football schools, ranging from national contenders to coaching staffs in need of a break, are primed to ascend thanks to the transfer site.

Contents

1. USC Trojans

Additions to note: Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams, Pittsburgh WR Jordan Addison, Oregon RB Travis Dye, Arizona State LB Eric Gentry, and CB Mekhi Blackmon (Colorado)

If there was any doubt, after plucking Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, USC has no intention of waiting to compete for the College Football Playoff. The Trojans landed 19 transfers, four more than any other club, including two of the class’ top four players.

After following Riley from Oklahoma, quarterback Caleb Williams is the focus, but Biletnikoff-winning receiver Jordan Addison has made waves since joining the Trojans last week. C.J. Stroud and Jaxon Smith-Njigba are two of the top quarterback-wide receiver combinations in NCAA football. Also, don’t think Riley scrimped on defense. The transfer portal will bring eleven defenders to Los Angeles.

After Clay Helton’s firing, USC’s roster was already undervalued. The Trojans will rapidly carry expectations to fight for the Pac-12 with the surge of talent headed to Heritage Hall.

2. Ole Miss Rebels

Additions to note: Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss) quarterback, RB TCU’s Zach Evans (EDGE) Georgia Tech’s Jared Ivey (TE) Trigg, Michael (USC)

After bringing in nine four-star transfer recruits or above, the Rebels were placed second in the 247Sports transfer rankings, following only Alabama and Texas in average recruit rating. Dart, the No. 3 overall recruit and a worthy successor to NFL Draft choice Matt Corral, is the star of the group.

In addition, the Rebels emphasized skill talent in order to provide Dart weaponry. Ulysses Bentley IV and Evans, both running backs, saw action on opposite sides of the Battle for the Iron Skillet. Malik Heath, Jaylon Robinson, and Jordan Watkins are all seasoned receivers.

In 2021, Ole Miss won ten regular-season games for the first time in school history. With so many new faces, the Rebels are in for a year of transition, but Lane Kiffin has Ole Miss prepared to contend.

3. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Additions to note: Texas QB Casey Thompson, Florida State QB Chubba Purdy DE Alabama’s Stephon Wynn Mathis, Ochaun (TCU)

The Cornhuskers went all-in on the gateway, making 14 transfers thus far, with more on the way. Nine of the transfers came from Power Five schools, including two defensive backs from Alabama in recent days.

After a stunning 2021 season in which an inconsistent offense cost them multiple one-score games, Nebraska went all-in on offense. Thompson likely secure the starting job as quarterback, but Nebraska has a long-term option in FSU transfer Chubba Purdy. Trey Palmer and Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda join Omar Manning on the outside to create a new look.

The Cornhuskers have failed to produce the requisite speed and separation to play Scott Frost’s spread offense. Nebraska is better equipped to enter competitive games thanks to the transfers and the addition of new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple.

4. Texas Longhorns

Additions to note: Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers, Alabama wide receiver Agiye Hall, Wyoming wide receiver Isaiah Neyor, Ohio State cornerback Ryan Watts, and TE Jahleel Billingsley (Alabama)

Although the Longhorns only added five transfers, few teams will rely on them as much as Texas. Since Vince Young, Ewers was the only perfect 1.0000 quarterback recruit, and he immediately altered the atmosphere around a program that finished 5-7 in 2021.

After fielding 1,000-yard rusher Bijan Robinson and near-1,000-yard receiver Xavier Worthy in 2021, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian built up his skill groupings. Hall and Billingsley are anticipated to be significant players for Alabama in 2022 after combining for 878 yards and 12 touchdowns against Wyoming.

The Longhorns can emerge as the Big 12 favorite if they can improve on defense and offensive line — both of which are not guaranteed. Every transfer, however, must be successful.

5. South Carolina Gamecocks

Additions to note: Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, Central Michigan defensive back Devonni Reed, James Madison wide receiver Antwane Wells, and Texas tight end Austin Stogner (Oklahoma)

In 2021, the Gamecocks stunned even themselves by putting up a promising 7-6 season despite a weakened roster and quarterback carousel. It was crucial to catch tanking Florida and Auburn at the proper time, but South Carolina coach Shane Beamer has turned the unexpected success into true roster success.

Rattler was expected to be the No. 1 choice in the 2022 NFL Draft entering into last season, but his stock plummeted after a turbulent Oklahoma season. Rattler is still one of the top overall arm talents in college football, and he should be a huge upgrade. Beamer did a good job of surrounding him with targets, including James Madison’s 1,200-yard receiver Wells and Arkansas State’s 800-yard receiver Corey Rucker.

With Tennessee and Kentucky ready for spectacular seasons, the SEC East will go even further, but if Beamer’s development continues, South Carolina might move closer to the top of the conference. To say the offensive talent of the Gamecocks has changed is an understatement.

Back in late February — two months after Medina Spirit died unexpectedly — the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission suspended Baffert for 90 days. As a result, Baffert can’t have any of his horses that he trains compete in races in the state.
