After appearing to punch the Kentucky Derby-winning horse in the face as it was leaving the track, a racing official has sparked uproar.

Rich Strike, a long shot at 80-1 in the Derby, came from behind to overcome Epicenter and Zandon in one of the biggest upsets in Derby history.

The escort rider could be seen striking the Derby winner in the face in an attempt to control him, in scenes that shocked observers.

I’m not a @peta campaigner, but this is ridiculous. There’s no excuse to strike a horse in the face, let alone the horse that brought these billionaires millions of dollars. If he’s doing this on live TV, you can tell he abuses the horses on a regular basis. I sincerely hope that justice is done https://t.co/IpIDdoPhfB

Was it really necessary for that guy to strike Rich Strike in the face after the race?

Rich Strike’s steward should be dismissed for his harsh and abusive handling of his charge. #nbcsports #KentuckyDerby2022 #ChurchillDowns Is it possible that no one saw him smack the horse in the head? After he almost took the bit out of his mouth?

Your outrider’s treatment of Rich Strike was a shame. He was out of control much more than the horse!

Another outrider should be fired for his disgusting acts against Rich Strike, our Derby winner.

You must determine who is leading the winning horse. Rich Strike was clearly adamant about not being led in. Why didn’t he just hand over the reigns to the WINNER instead of punching and slapping him? Disgraceful…..
