The Race

The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses, presented by Woodford Reserve. The race takes place on the dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and is one and a quarter miles long. In the race, colts and geldings must carry 126 pounds (57 kg), while fillies must carry 121 pounds (55 kg).

The Kentucky Derby features a field of 20 horses, which is larger than most horse races, which feature an average of 8 horses competing against one another. The 20 horses competing in the Kentucky Derby must first compete in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, a series of 35 races held at racetracks across the United States and around the world. The top four horses in each of the 35 races are awarded points, and the 20 horses with the most points earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate. The winning purse for the Kentucky Derby is $2 million.

Every year on the first Saturday in May, the Kentucky Derby attracts an estimated 155,000 spectators. It is America’s longest-running sporting event, as well as one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. The Kentucky Derby is known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” because of the approximate time it takes the winner to run from the starting gate to the finish line. The Kentucky Derby is the first race in Thoroughbred Racing’s Triple Crown, which is followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
